Organisations: This course is used as a training induction program for organisations using (or intending to use) sub 2kg drones in their operations. It covers the key area of Hazards (situational awareness), Battery management, and the Law (legal requirements for drone use).
Individuals: Being able to fly your drone is just the beginning. If you want to operate a drone under 2kgs commercially you are going to need insurance. This course covers key aspects of how to safely plan and carry out a drone mission. Successful completion of the course will make you eligible for insurance with QBE.
There is an online component and a practical component. The online component will take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the pre-existing knowledge of the trainee.
The practical component consists of a flight assessment that can take a few hours (for already skilled pilots) to a day (for beginners).
Hazards: Situational awareness and how to identify and mitigate against risks in the flight operations area.
Batteries: Battery management and how to get the most out of your batteries and use them safely.
The Law: The legal requirement for operating a drone in Australia.
You will need to bring personal protective equipment to the course, including sunglasses, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, a hat and water bottle.
You do not need your own drone to do the course, however it is highly recommended that you do have one for practice in your own time.
